Swami Vivekananda Biography - This illustrious patriot - saint of modern India was born in Kolkata on January 12, 1863 . He was named Narendra . His father, Viswanath Datta, was a brilliant lawyer. He was highly respected for his intelligence and culture. His mother, Bhuvaneshwari Devi , was a devout woman with a great capacity for training of their children. As a child Narendra was very naughty and arrogant , and often had to be placed under a water faucet to contain his antics . He preached the gospel of the unity of religions and spread the seed of purity , knowledge and faith. After his two-year stay in the United States toured England and Europe for three months.

The standing ovation he received on his return to India in no way took his mind away from his mission to bring religion to the gates of the poorest. His goal was to awaken the masses by reviving the Vedic religion , and to clean the slag and impurities that had clung to him for so many centuries.

In 1902 Swami Vivekananda entered Mahasamadhi . Six years of discipleship under Sri Ramakrishna had brought him to the realms of the vision of God . Seven years of traveling in India had expanded their view of life . Nine years of national and international career were all that was left of him , and yet how full glorious work those nine years were!

The gospel of Swami Vivekananda was one of hope, faith and strength. Never succumbed to despair, for he knew that India was capable of expansion and growth. His clarion call to the nation was: "Awake, arise and stop not till the goal is reached. "
