Colin Powell Biography - The U.S. Secretary of State , Who rose from the Bronx to become a key player in global politics and war . He served twice in Vietnam , which many consider informed his opposition to the invasion of Iraq.

Colin Powell was born to Jamaican immigrant parents Luther and Maud in 1937 , and raised in the South Bronx area of New York.

He was educated in the public school system of the City of New York , before attending City College of New York , where he studied for a bachelor's degree in Geology . Powell also earned a Master of Business Administration from George Washington University .

After graduating , he became a second lieutenant in service in the U.S. Army and spent two tours of duty in Vietnam. During his thirty-five -year military career , Powell achieved the rank of four-star general .

He was also assistant to the President - Ronald Reagan - National Safety 1987-89 , in addition to being named the twelfth Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of States - the highest position within the Department of Defense. During his time in office, Powell oversaw many overseas campaigns , including the successful Operation Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf War of 1991 . He retired from the army in 1993, a decorated soldier .

After retiring , Powell published his autobiography " My American Journey " as well as appearing around America and abroad as a public speaker.

In 2001 , George W. Bush , Powell selected to be his secretary of state , and became the first African American to hold the office .

During his tenure, Powell was criticized for his role in building the case for the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Its main role before and after the invasion was to gain international support for a multinational coalition . In 2004 , recognizing that it was unlikely that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction, Powell announced his resignation as Secretary of State. National Security Advisor , Condoleezza Rice, was his successor.

Powell also is heavily involved in charity work , especially for those charities with the aim of helping children . He has been the president of " the promise of America ," an organization aimed at increasing investment by the United States in his youth.

Alma Powell married Vivien Johnson , and the couple has three children : a son of Michael , and two daughters Linda and Anne- Marie .
